How to Choose an AI Search Optimization Platform: A 14-Day Proof Plan

Practical GEO

An AI search optimization platform should help you answer four questions: Where does our brand appear, what evidence shapes those answers, what should we change, and did the change help? If the product stops at a visibility score, your team still owns the hardest part of the work.

The most useful buying test is to follow one real customer question from an AI answer to a published improvement. Here is a 14-day evaluation plan you can run with your own site, including a scorecard and a worked example. The two weeks test the workflow; they do not establish a deadline for ranking gains.

Start with the buying decision you want to influence

A prompt such as “What is project management?” may produce plenty of interesting answers and little business value. “Which project management tools support client approvals for a 20-person agency?” exposes a specific buying decision.

Build a small evaluation set before the demo. A useful starting point is 12 prompts: four category questions, four questions with a real constraint, two competitor comparisons, and two questions about your brand's own facts. These counts are a practical starting point, not an industry benchmark.

For each prompt, write down the intended customer, their constraint, and the page that should support an answer. If you cannot name that page, you may have found a content gap before opening a dashboard.

Keep one group of prompts fixed during the trial. Put new exploratory questions in a separate group so expanding coverage does not masquerade as improving performance.

Days 1–3: Establish whether you can trust the measurement

Ask the vendor to run your prompts and show the underlying answers. Inspect several responses together rather than accepting a single attractive screenshot.

Evidence to requestWhy it matters
Exact prompt and run timeMakes the observation inspectable
Engine, model where available, and search modeAvoids treating different experiences as equivalent
Raw answer and cited URLsSeparates a brand mention from a citation
Competitor matches and aliasesReveals false matches and missed mentions
Failed runs and denominatorPrevents errors from silently improving a score
Locale and other controlled settingsHelps explain differences between runs

Run the same set again under comparable conditions. Variation is information. A system that shows variability honestly is more useful than one that makes an unstable channel look precise.

Do not assume an API response perfectly represents what a person sees in a consumer chat interface. Ask how the platform collects its observations, then describe results within that scope.

Days 4–6: Trace one missing recommendation to its source

Choose a commercially relevant prompt where a competitor appears and your brand does not. Open the cited pages. What do they actually substantiate?

Imagine a fictional scheduling product, Harbor, missing from answers about booking software for distributed teams. Its homepage says “seamless scheduling.” The competing source explains timezone handling, buffer rules, calendar conflicts, and plan restrictions.

That is a concrete hypothesis: Harbor has not made the relevant decision facts easy to verify. It is not proof that adding a paragraph will produce a recommendation.

Ask the platform to connect the observed gap to specific work:

  • Which source supports the competitor's inclusion?
  • Which relevant fact is missing, ambiguous, or outdated on our site?
  • Which existing page should carry the answer?
  • What evidence is needed before we can make the claim?

A recommendation such as “improve authority” leaves too much interpretation. A useful task names the page, the missing information, and the proposed change.

Days 7–10: Ship one change your customer would value

For the fictional Harbor example, an improvement might explain how bookings handle multiple timezones, with a short walkthrough and the limits of each plan. A product owner verifies the behavior before publication.

Keep the answer useful without a sales pitch. If the feature is unavailable on a lower plan, say so. If a workaround is required, show it. Clear limits help buyers qualify themselves and give answer systems more dependable source material.

Check that the page is reachable, internally linked, and readable as text. Google's guidance for AI features says established SEO practices remain relevant; it does not prescribe special AI markup. OpenAI's crawler documentation separately identifies OAI-SearchBot for search and GPTBot for training. Treat access configuration and content quality as separate checks.

The acceptance evidence is a real URL, a verified change, and a recorded publication time. A generated draft alone does not complete this step.

Days 11–14: Re-measure without inventing causality

Repeat the fixed prompt set. Compare raw answers, citations, and accuracy as well as aggregate scores. Record changes in the page, the model configuration, and the collection method.

If visibility improves, call it an observed change. Other sources, retrieval behavior, and model updates can also influence the answer. Compare with similar unchanged prompts where possible, and continue measuring after the trial.

A platform can pass the two-week workflow test even if external visibility has not moved yet. It should have demonstrated reliable observations, a credible diagnosis, a useful shipped improvement, and a way to evaluate the result. OpenAI explicitly says placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed.

Use this scorecard before signing

Score each area from 0 to 2: 0 means unavailable, 1 means partially demonstrated, and 2 means demonstrated on your own data. These are suggested purchasing criteria, not a certification.

AreaWhat earns a 2
MeasurementInspectable answers, settings, errors, and repeat runs
DiagnosisA cited source connected to a specific content or technical gap
ExecutionAn actionable fix that your team can review and ship
Brand accuracyClaims checked against approved product facts
Follow-throughBefore-and-after evidence with limitations stated
OwnershipClear responsibilities, exports, permissions, and total costs

Use the total to structure discussion. Treat missing evidence in measurement or brand accuracy as a reason to investigate, even if the total looks good. Ask about generation credits, supported models, query limits, and publishing access before comparing prices.

Where Zeover fits

Zeover connects AI visibility benchmarking, citation analysis, website audits, and brand-governed content workflows. Teams can use those capabilities to investigate a missing recommendation, prepare a relevant fix, and return to the same buyer questions to see what changed. Available features and limits depend on the account and plan.

That makes the proof plan a useful way to evaluate Zeover too. Bring a real buyer question, inspect the sources, and judge the work the platform helps you complete. For the measurement side, see our guide to AI share of voice tracking.

Your next step: choose one question a qualified buyer would ask this week. Find the answer your website can substantiate today. The distance between those two is a much better starting point than a dashboard score.
