Step 2: Run Queries Across All Major Models

Don’t test just one AI model. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok each draw from different data sources, weigh different signals, and produce different results. A brand that ranks first in Claude’s recommendations might not appear at all in Grok’s.

Run every query on your list through all four models. For each response, record these data points:

  • Whether your brand is mentioned (yes/no)

  • Which competitors are mentioned alongside you
  • The overall sentiment toward your brand (positive, neutral, negative)
  • Whether the model cites sources, and if so, which ones

Step 4: Analyze Why Competitors Rank Higher

When a competitor consistently outranks you in AI responses, dig into the reasons. The most common factors are content volume and authority, structured data quality, third-party citations, and recency of information.

Check your competitor’s website for structured data markup that you’re missing. Look at whether they have more recent press coverage, more detailed product documentation, or more active community engagement.
